How many people?

I had to go to the emergency room today for my elbow. A long sorry tale of repeated swelling and draining and mismanaged consultant appointments. Things finally came to a head when the damn thing sprang a leak today and because of the risk of infection in the joint we were forced to drive 40mins to the nearest ER.

While I was there I saw

  • One nurse who cleaned and prepared the elbow for inspection
  • One junior doctor who said it was infected already and called his senior doctor
  • Another nurse to redress the wound while we waited
  • A senior doctor to correect the junior doctor, and clearn out the puncture
  • Yet another nurse to rebandage the joint
  • And finally someone (there is no equivalent job title in English) to take a blood sample in case the senior doctor was wrong after all.

I'm not really complaining. They were all really nice and got me fixed up and back awaiting this small operation next week pretty quickly, but it does seem odd that so many people were needed for a small elbow puncture doesn't it?
